Belmar/LAKE COMO, NJ – For one day, the next generation of Belmar and Lake Como leaders didn’t just learn about government—they stepped directly into it.
Seventy-five sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students from Belmar Elementary School took part in this year’s Youth Government Program, an immersive experience designed to bring civics lessons to life. The program, led by BES Middle School Social Studies teacher Mr. Sean McDonald, challenged students to think beyond the classroom, applying for leadership roles such as mayor, board of education member, and town council representative—positions that required them to develop ideas aimed at improving both their school and the broader community.
The highlight of the program came on April 30, when students participated in Youth Government Day, splitting their time between visits to Belmar Borough Hall and neighboring Lake Como. Throughout the morning, students were introduced to a wide range of public service careers, from borough administrator and police chief to EMT, fire chief, recreation director, public works staff, and borough attorney.
