Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading needs. Students in the group read leveled texts that offer challenging opportunities to practice applying many reading strategies already taught. The teacher provides support for reading success while encouraging students to read independently. Guided reading allows teachers to both work with individual students in the small group to practice the literary focus of the lesson, as well as other necessary skills.
K-2 teachers, as well as the 3rd grade basic skills teacher at Belmar Elementary School utilize guided reading when scheduling allows. In addition, some ELA teachers in grades 4-8 implement similar methods in their ELA classes.
