Summer Reading Program 2019 for Incoming Grades 1-4
Reading is a lifelong skill that needs to be nurtured and practiced regulary. Research shows that students who don’t read during summer vacation could experience summer slide and lose two to three months of reading achievement. In order to help reduce reading skill loss, all incoming students in grades 1 through 4 will be required to complete summer reading assignments.
Please note that there are some changes to the assignments from previous years.
All incoming students in grades 1-4 must read 77 Steps (15 minute increments) by September 6, 2019. This equates to 19.25 hours of total summer reading. Reading logs will be distributed to students and will also be available on the school website. A list of suggested leveled books and leveled power words/trick words to practice will also be included on the website. Students are encouraged to select books that are of high-interest to them, books that can be read with fluency and accuracy – their “just right” level.
In an effort to provide our students with consistent access to leveled books throughout the summer, the school media center will be open on the following days:
Beginning July 1st – August 15th
Books can also be borrowed from The Belmar Public Library (517 10th Avenue).
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 9am - 8pm
Tuesday, Friday: 9am - 5pm
Saturday: 9am - 3pm
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. I hope you have a great summer!
